The Story Behind Amuzin

My name is Matt Lake. I’ve always had a passion for comedy, from watching my comedy hero Lee Evans to spending evenings in grotty little upstairs rooms above city centre pubs, enjoying grassroots stand-up comedy at its most intimate.

Making people laugh has always come naturally to me. Whether it was sharing jokes and stories over coffee and Marabou chocolate in the locker rooms of offshore oil rigs, or spending eight years working nightclub doors, exchanging banter with staff and punters, I’ve always enjoyed a good laugh. What I never imagined was that one day I’d find myself on the other side of the microphone.

Credit Where its Due

My comedy adventure really began with a chance meeting at a LaffaCake Comedy night in Dronfield, where I met Greg Philips, who was MCing the evening. We got chatting after the gig, and I offered to lend a hand. He welcomed my involvement, and what started as a simple offer of help quickly grew into a partnership.

Together, we developed LaffaCake, expanding into new venues and attracting bigger audiences. Eventually, I suggested turning it into a limited company, and the rest, as they say, is history. Ironically, I only started writing and performing stand-up myself because I realised that having two MCs would allow us to operate twice as many venues while sharing the comedians between them. Becoming a comedian was never the plan; it was simply a rather unusual business strategy!

A New Venture

After several years of helping to build LaffaCake and creating some fantastic memories along the way, I stepped down in May 2026 to begin a new chapter. Greg continued with LaffaCake, taking it towards Sheffield, while I set out with fresh ideas and the same passion for bringing great live comedy to audiences in and around Chesterfield.

And so Amuzin Comedy was born. A completely independent venture with its own identity, carefully considered staging, lighting and sound, and one simple ambition: to bring brilliant professional comedians to our local communities without charging a fortune. Our philosophy says it all: Spend less. Laugh more.

A New Adventure

These days, you’ll still find me working the door, although the welcome is probably a bit warmer than it was in my security days! Having organised comedy nights with LaffaCake, I now put that same energy into every aspect of Amuzin, from booking comedians and promoting shows to building the website, setting up the venue and greeting everyone as they arrive. Seeing a room full of people enjoying themselves makes all the hard work worthwhile.

We’ve already enjoyed some fantastic nights together in Brimington and Chesterfield, with more venues and exciting plans on the horizon. It’s been quite a journey from those grotty upstairs comedy rooms and offshore locker rooms, but one thing hasn’t changed: I still love making people laugh, and this adventure is only just getting started.
